Specialized Literature

Sometimes I think about writing a book that deals with extreme introversion. There aren't very many books on the subject of introversion specifically; while there are some good ones among those that do exist, they tend to be very generalized. They're often written for (or about) anyone who has experienced even the slightest inclination towards introversion. Sometimes these books are generalized to such an extent that they read like horoscopes, allowing anyone at all to relate. What I imagine doing is writing for those of us whose temperaments there is no question about, for those who fall squarely and deeply within the introversion spectrum. It would be about my own experiences, of course, but I imagine it would include a lot of research targeted towards a smaller percentage of the population. The subject matter would be more specialized; it would cover something between moderate and extreme introversion. I feel that an accurate discussion on the subject can't be had without making it much more focused. And how can it be very helpful if it's not accurate?

Anyway, one reason that I'm pondering this today is that I've noticed that a lot of visitors come to this blog by googling the phrase "extreme introvert." I feel a little guilty for not writing anything particularly helpful here, or at least for not writing more regularly. On the other hand, this is only a personal blog; I never meant it to be anything more important than that.

Hi Hypothetical,
seems to be a great blog, a rare find (though rarely updated). I'm interested in something you wrote a year ago: "Though it sounds very elitist, perhaps I should come up with some guidelines on spotting real introverts. Or the extreme ones, at least."
Hey, do come up with these guidelines, I for one am interested!
Cheers

Hi, Gregorik, I will try to post some"guidelines" soon (as well as write more frequently). Thanks for visiting!

Cheers!

Yes, please do keep the writings coming. I really enjoy reading your ideas. And today I did indeed google "extreme introvert", in my own search for peace of mind - am I 'wrong' in being so 'antisocial'? Or is that just who I am naturally? You know, that neverending (yet) quest. :D

AmongTheRuins, ah, yes, I'm familiar with those questions. Of course, you're just as "wrong" for being unsocial (not sure if you actually meant "antisocial") as everyone else is for being social. In the past, when people asked me why I talked so little, I often wondered why they talked so much. It's perfectly valid to question these things, but it helps to create some perspective, too.

Anyway, I will try to write more!

Dude, write when you feel like it and don't feel the pressure. After all, part of being an introvert is lacking this desire to reach out so much. Maybe we introverts don't need saving. Maybe if we google "extreme introversion" like I did our problem is not our introversion but the obsession with ourselves. It's tough because we are closer to ourseves than other people.

I laughed out loud when I read the comment7-20-09 saying a lot of visitors come to your blog by googling "extreme introvert". That's EXACTLY how I found you, too lol! I'm loving reading it and can relate soooo well. I'm a 50 yr old female (sounds so old) who didn't find out I was 'ok' until about a year ago. What a relief *that was.
Thank you for your blog.

Mr. C, it seems you're saying that we may need saving from our own selves, if anything. And I guess you're right: It does feel that way sometimes. It's easy to get lost when looking to the inside so often.

Anon, I'm glad you laughed. I thought it was funny, too. I'm curious what it took for you to realize out that you're "okay." It's amazing that it's something we need to figure out, especially when it should be a given!

Hi ! I also came to your blog by googling "extreme introversion" and so far I think it's great - thank you! I for one would be interested in a book on the subject of extreme introversion if you were to write one. And I'm with Mr C on the need to not write more often than you feel comfortable with.

Anon, thanks for your comment. Though there aren't a lot of books on the subject, I've come to find that there are increasingly more blogs dealing with introversion, some very interesting ones, too.
